“The Encounter Between Homer and the Bible” with Professor Azzan Yadin-Israel (Rutgers University).
Azzan Yadin-Israel is professor of Jewish Studies and Classics at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where he is chair of the Jewish Studies department. He received his BA in philosophy and Jewish thought from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1994 and his PhD in Jewish Studies from the University of California at Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union in 1999. Professor Yadin-Israel is the author of Temptation Transformed: The Story of How the Forbidden Fruit Became an Apple (2023), The Grace of God and the Grace of Man: The Theologies of Bruce Springsteen (2016) and the Intuitive Vocabulary volumes on Ancient Greek (2022), Spanish (2019) and German (2013). He will speak about the encounter between Homer (the Iliad and the Odyssey) and the Bible as Homeric culture was spreading through the ancient eastern Mediterranean, honoring the late Rabbi Robert Fine’s life-long study of the intersection of Jewish and Greek culture.
