Friday, May 1-Saturday, May 2: Temple Israel’s Rabbi Selig Salkowitz Memorial Scholar in Residence Shabbat featuring Cantor Isidoro Abramowicz, Cantor at the Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue and Director of the Cantorial School at the Abraham Geiger College in Berlin, Germany

On May 1st and May 2nd, Temple Israel in Ridgewood will feature Cantor Isidoro Abramowicz, Cantor at the Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue and Director of the Cantorial School at the Abraham Geiger College in Berlin Germany.

Cantor Abramowicz will bring his cantorial melodies joining Rabbi David Fine on Friday night and Saturday morning May 1 and 2 with the accompaniment of Dr. Ralph Selig on the organ. The Cantor’s melodies reflect his heritage in Argentina where Rioplatense Spanish is spoken. Rioplatense Spanish is characterized by a unique accent heavily influenced by Italian immigration. It is often described as having a musicality similar to Italian dialects.

This Scholar in Residence program is funded by the Rabbi Selig Salkowitz Distinguished Lecture Fund. Participation is free and everyone is welcome.

Cantor Isidoro Abramowicz is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is Cantor at Berlin’s Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue. The Abraham Geiger College, of which Cantor Abramowitz was a 2013 graduate and is now Director of its cantorial school, was founded in 1999 as the first liberal seminary in Continental Europe since the Shoah.

Cantor Abramowicz attended the Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute in 2012. He also attended the University of Potsdam in Germany and he studied piano at the National University of the Arts in Argentina. He divides his time between Germany and Israel.
