In the ancient Near East the universe was populated by panoply of deities numbering into the thousands. The plains and cities of Mesopotamia, the skies above it, and the surrounding mountains and seas, were inhabited not only by men and women but also, according to old beliefs, by a host of gods, ghosts, spirits, demons, and monsters.  The forces of nature such as the sun, the moon, night, and the planets such as Venus, Mars and Jupiter were represented by gods. So too were the storm, the ocean and the river Euphrates. There were gods of cattle, grain, farming, pastures, weaving, brewing, metallurgy, and scribal arts among many others. Also gods of the netherworld, demon gods, gods of magic, gods of healing, mother goddesses and warfare gods. In two lectures, Ira Spar will introduce us to the world of these gods.
