Special Guest Speaker on Israel this coming Shabbat at Temple Israel

Please come to Temple Israel this Shabbat, June 29, for a special guest speaker during services:

Ronit Hanegby, PhD.
The Current Crisis in Israel:
A Mother's Perspective

Dr. Hanegby, a second generation sabra and resident of Hertzliya Pituach,
is the mother four children.  One of her children was a sharp-shooter in
Ramallah at the recent siege of Yasser Arafat's compound.  Her other children are
also at various points either before or after military service.

Please come and hear Dr. Hanegby's perspective and gain valuable insight
into the realities and struggles of Israelis at this critical time.

There will also be an opportunity to meet and discuss with Dr. Hanegby at
Kiddush after services.

The Human Face of Israeli Victims of Terror

CNN and Newsweek this week are presenting coverage showing the human face of Israeli victims of Palestinian terror. Perhaps it is a result of criticism of news coverage that is slanted against Israel in obvious and subtle ways. Perhaps it portends a change in the slant.
CNN this week will present stories about various Israeli victims in its television reporting. And on its Web site is a moving set of materials on a mini-Web site called Victims of Terror:

       http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2002/terror.victims/index.html

The mini-site includes a listing of the name, age, photograph, and brief information about each of the Israeli victims over the past 18 months, and how & where they were murdered.  The cumulative effect of looking at each picture and reading the information is very moving. The site also has articles and a chronology of the terror attacks.

The Newsweek article is about treatment of Israeli victims of terror attacks at the trauma unit at Jerusalem’s Ein Karem Hadassah Hospital, and the unique, terrifying injuries they suffer:

The Ted Turner Brouhaha

Here are the 2 articles in the London newspaper The Guardian last week reporting on the Ted Turner interview in which he equated Israeli military action with Palestinian terror attacks:

Don't Get Too Comfortable

The influence on Palestinian children to kill Israelis comes from numerous elements of their society, including their schools and parents.  Last week Alan Keyes' tv show showed video from Palestinian schools of schoolchildren pledging their blood and lives to killing Israelis.  Here are pictures from an Arabic-language Web site of a school ceremony in Gaza. Notice the burning Israeli flag, the "weapons",  and the "blood" on the hands (reminiscent of the murder and disembowlement of 2 lost Israelis in Ramallah last year):

And here is a translation of an interview with the mother of a suicide bomber, expressing her nurturing of and joy at his accomplishments, published in a London-based Arabic newspaper earlier this month:

Unfortunately, it appears that a majority of the Palestinian people support suicide attacks against Israeli civilians, and define their struggle as one to "liberate all of historic Palestine", i.e., Israel:

President Bush's Mideast Plan

Here is the printed text (and a video) of the entirety of President Bush's June 24 bold speech setting forth conditions for American support of a Palestinian state.  It is important to understand the entire position President Bush sets forth, including demands on all sides to the conflict:

A Brief History of the Mideast Conflict

Here is a brief visual history of the Mideast conflict, with maps. It is not an exhaustive study of the problem nor does it address the subtleties of the dispute, but it sets forth some basic facts crucial to an understanding of the conflict:
