Announcements for April 30, 2008

 

On Wednesday, April 30th, please light your yellow candle in observance of Yom HaShoah.  Feel free to recite the mediation and poem enclosed in the box.

 

1.       Candle lighting for this Shabbat is at 7:36 pm on Friday evening.  Friday night services are at 8:30 pm.  Shabbat morning services begin at 9:00 am at which time we will call Wesley Caruso, son of our members, Debra & Stephen Caruso, to the bimah as a Bar Mitzvah.  Babysitting is available at 9:00 am in Room 5.  At 10:30 am, Na’areynu begins in room 4.

 

2.       Sunday minyan is at 9:30 am.  Please help us assure a minyan with your presence.

 

3.       The 22nd Annual Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Service will be held on Sunday, May 4th at the West Side Presbyterian Church at 7:30 pm.

 

4.   Rabbi Steinlauf’s lunchtime Talmud Study will meet on Monday, May 5th from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm.

 

5.   Cantor Freedman’s Torah Reading Club will meet on Tuesday, May 6th from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.

 

6.       Tuesday evening’s minyan will be held at 7:45 pm.  Please help us assure a minyan with your presence.

 

7.       Rabbi Gil Steinlauf’s Walking with God class will meet on Tuesday, May 6th from 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

 

8.       Religious School:

10.  Hold the Date:

a.       The Amsterdam Family Endowment Fund Aleph Siddur Presentation will be held during Shabbat morning services on May 10th.

b.       General Membership Mtg & Elections:  Wed., May 14th at 7:30 pm.

c.       Jr. Congregation will meet on Saturday, May 17th at 10:00 am in the Beit Midrash.  For parts, please contact Director of Education, Rabbi Sharon Litwin at 201-444-9320.

c.   Recognition of Volunteers Dinner & Installation of the Board of Directors will be held on Tuesday, May 27th beginning with dinner at 7:00 pm (RSVP) followed by services and installation.  This will be an evening to say thank you to all the valued members of the Board of Trustees who have given their time and energy to Temple Israel.  Flyers are available through the synagogue office, May’s Temple Talk or on the Shabbat table.

d.       Salute to Israel Parade:  Sunday, June 1st.  Registration forms can be found on the Shabbat table or our website www.synagogue.org.  Registration deadline is May 7th.

e.       Farewell & Thank Your Kiddush:  Please join us on Saturday, June 14th as we express our thanks to those special people who in their own way contributed so much of themselves to Temple Israel:  The Dobkins and Fels Families who have gone the extra distance to support our shul through our supplemental dues program; Rabbi Gil Steinlauf for raising us to higher spiritual levels of Torah and Mitzvot these past 7 years; Cantor Michelle Freedman for giving our children and adults the gift of trope and nusach for the past 9 years;  Jose Serna:  Thanks to an anonymous donation we will be dedicating our Kiddush Room in his honor.  RSVP by May 28th to Kiddush614@synagogue.org

a.       Golf Outing:  The BMC will be holding its 3rd annual hackers open on June 19th.

13.  Sisterhood:

a.   SAVE THE DATE:  Our next Ladies Night Out/Game Night will be held on Monday, May 19th.  Join us for Mah jongg, bridge, scattergories, pokers, etc.  Please make every effort to attend since we will be voting on the Board of Directors that will serve for the next two years.  Your support is vital to Sisterhood.  Of course, chocolate will be served. b.   Love to read?  On Sunday, June 1st, the group will meet at 7:30 pm at Jo Rosen's home to discuss Matrimony by Josh Henkin.  Four signed copies are available for purchase at the Sisterhood Gift Shop for the list price of $24.  RSVP to Laura Brody if you will be attending.

14.  Tikkun Olam:

Walk-In Dinner Program:  If you would like to help prepare and serve a hot meal for the homeless on any of the following dates, please contact Sue Hill at 201-445-0684 or Suz684@msn.com.  May 13 and October 14.  Food donations are also greatly appreciated.

 
15.  Endowment Committee:  The Goodman Endowment Fund is now awarding stipends to students participating in certain programs which meet the following requirements:  1) Stipends would be available for programs occurring during the years between b’nei mitzvah and high school graduation. 2) Consideration will only be given to programs costing $1,000 or more per person.  3)  Camp stipends or school tuition stipends will not be eligible. 4) Stipend is to be used for a program which furthers Conservative Movement values and is approved by the Rabbi.  5) Applications will be accepted between August 1 through November 1 for school year programs. 6) Stipends will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to the extent that distributable funds are available.  Application forms are available from the synagogue office or email to endowments@synagogue.org.

EL AL: If you would like to donate a flat of inpatiens or petunias for our El Alers to plant around our synagogue, please drop them off the week of May 12th.  Thank you.

17.  A Big Mitzvah:  We need your help in fulfillment of one of the most important mitzvot:  Feeding the hungry.  We ask that you please donate supermarket gift certificates to help needy families purchase groceries.  Please bring them to the synagogue office. Thank you for your help.

 

18.  The Oneg and Kiddush this Shabbat is sponsored by Debra & Stephen Caruso in honor of their son, Wesley Caruso, on the occasion of his bar mitzvah.

 

19.  At next week’s Shabbat morning service, we will celebrate with our Kitah Aleph students & their families as they receive their first siddur.

a.       A Birthday Party for Israel at the YJCC:  Join us on Thursday, May 8 from 4:30 – 6:30 pm at the Bergen YJCC hosts its 3 rd Annual Israel’s Birthday Party family celebration. The party begins with entertainment followed by dinner (barbeque & Israeli fare) and birthday cake. This event is co-sponsored by the UJA. b.       Parents of Children & Other Dependents With Special Needs Workshop:  You are invited to attend a workshop on “Planning for the Future of your Child or Dependent with Special Needs” presented by Michael Werfel & Alan Geramian on Sunday, May 18th at 11:00 am at Temple Emanuel, 87 Overlook Drive, Woodcliff Lake.

c.       The Living Room, a Health, Wellness, and Healing Center at Jewish Family Services of Bergen County is sponsoring the following programs at the Living Room, 1485 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ:  A Jewish Take on the Twelve Steps:  Every Wednesday at 7:30 pm.  All Jews in recovery and family members are welcome at our JACS meeting (Jewish Alcoholics, Chemically dependent person and Significant others).  Gain support from others affected by drinking or drug use.  A special meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 16th:  Passover and Personal Redemption:  The Haggadah As A Path To Serenity with Rabbi Amy Bolton, Director of the Living Room.  Big Book Twelve Step Study Meeting: Every Monday at 7:30 pm. All men and women in recovery are invited to join this all-addictions Big Book Step Study meeting.  Orthodox Divorced Moms: Mondays, May 12, June 2, 16 & 30th at 7:30 pm.  Talk about common issues, share ideas and resources.  September 11th Bereaved Parents Group:  June 10 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.  Second Generation: Children of Holocaust Survivors:  Thursdays, May 15 & June 12 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.  A monthly discussion group for children of Holocaust survivors.  Jewish Meditation with Rabbi Amy Bolton:  Wednesdays, May 7 & June 11 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm.  Learn how to add more calmness to your life.

d.       The 65th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Annual Holocaust Commemoration of UJA Federation of Northern NJ will take place on Thursday, May 1 at 7:00 pm at Temple Sholom, 385 Howland Ave, River Edge, NJ.  The media exhibit will be open for viewing at 6:15 pm.

f.        The Jewish Home of Rockleigh, Russ Berrie Home for Jewish Living, in its continuing effort to enhance the lives of the elderly in our community by providing needed programs and services, is pleased to announce two new initiatives to help the homebound elderly in Bergen County.  The first is aimed at those in the community who would like to attend Shabbat services but are unable to get to services on their own and the other is to provide a home delivered kosher meal for those who do not have the ability to prepare their own Shabbat meal.
