TEMPLE ISRAEL SISTERHOOD
Annual Membership Information
Shalom!
As I begin my first year as president of Sisterhood, I think of all the things that Sisterhood means to me. It means opportunities to learn about Judaism and to practice my davening and torah reading skills. It means the chance to help others through zdedakah. It means connecting with other women from our shul and from around the region and nation. It means book group, belly dancing, mah jong, Bingo, wine, and chocolate. Most of all, it means just what the name says—sisterhood—with a group of interesting, welcoming, dynamic women. Please join us to experience this sense of sisterhood for yourself.
Sisterhoods have disappeared from many Conservative synagogues, but ours is going strong. Our strength is our members. They range in age from the 30s to the 80s, represent a wide range of professions, and include synagogue members and nonmembers, Jewish and non-Jewish women. We will be exploring new ways to reach every woman affiliated with Temple Israel. If you are already a Sisterhood member, we thank you and hope that you will renew your membership for the coming year. If you have never joined Sisterhood before, we hope you will give us a try.
Our 2010-2011 programming year will be an exciting one. Leading up to the High Holydays, we explored the theme of renewal and regeneration through a discussion of mikveh at our annual Pool Party, folowed by a “field trip” to a Teaneck mikveh. On September 18, we will prepare our fabulous break-fast kugels (and get massages to relieve the pre-holiday stress). Upcoming events include Vashti’s Feast before Purim, a Women’s Seder in which we will share Pesach traditions, and a special nutrition program to end the year.
New Temple Israel members can join Sisterhood for the first year free. For others, dues are $36.00 for synagogue members and $54 for nonmembers. I also welcome any suggestions or ideas you may have. Thank you.
L’Shalom,
Elaine Silverstein
Sisterhood President
