Temple Israel Hosts Film:

Food, INC.

Temple Israel and JCC of Ridgewood will present the film Food, Inc. on Sunday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. Food, Inc. is a 2008 American documentary film narrated by Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser, and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner. The film examines corporate farming in the United States, concluding that agribusiness produces food that is unhealthy, in a way that is environmentally harmful and abusive of both animals and employees.

Beginning with an examination of the industrial production of meat (chicken, beef, and pork), the film points out how the processes used are inhumane and economically and environmentally unsustainable. Food, Inc. then looks at the industrial production of grains and vegetables (primarily corn and soy beans), again labeling this economically and environmentally unsustainable. The film's final segment covers the legal power of the major food companies, including food libel laws in thirteen U.S. states, which enable a food manufacturer or processor to sue a person or group who makes disparaging comments about its food products. Moving on to the economic power of the manufacturers, the film asserts that these companies’ profits are based on supplying cheap but contaminated food, the heavy use of petroleum-based chemicals (largely pesticides and fertilizers), and the promotion of unhealthy food consumption habits by the American public. Food, Inc. later shows how companies like Walmart are increasingly marketing organic foods as that industry grows with the movement toward more healthy, sustainable, and locally-grown foods.

A discussion will follow the film screening. The film showing and discussion are open to the public and all, including non-members, are invited. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. This is the third of a four-film series on food and sustainability issues. The series is co-sponsored by Temple Israel’s Membership Committee, Tikun Olam (“Repairing the World”) Committee, Sisterhood, and Brandeis Men’s Club.

The final showing in the film series will be on Sunday, June 3.

TEMPLE ISRAEL HOSTS FILM THE POWER OF COMMUNITY on March 11

Temple Israel and JCC of Ridgewood will present the film The Power of Community on Sunday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half and food imports cut by 80 percent, people were desperate.

This intriguing film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy – a vivid demonstration that necessity is the mother of invention. Cuba now boasts a great deal of organic farming, and has myriad solutions to deal with the paucity of oil. This movie is fascinating, educational, and empowering.

A discussion will follow the film screening. The film showing and discussion are open to the public and all, including non-members, are invited. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. This is the second of a four-film series on food and sustainability issues. The series is co-sponsored by Temple Israel’s Membership Committee, Tikun Olam (“Repairing the World”) Committee, Sisterhood, and Brandeis Men’s Club.

Future film dates will be the Sundays of April 29 and June 3.

Cantor Bromberg’s training and repertoire encompasses both art and folk music. A native of Southern California and former resident of Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas, Cantor Bromberg encountered and performed Spanish-language folk music, along with American and Celtic traditional ballads. Training in musical theater followed, then she studied classical voice and opera with Hilda Harris of the Manhattan School of Music. She discovered the Ladino musical tradition in New York in the mid-1980s, when she met Nico Castel, one of the first artists to perform and publish Ladino folk music in this country. Cantorial pulpits in El Paso, Texas, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, gave her an opportunity to discover and learn more of this music, from her Mexican and South American congregants and other local Ladino artists.
